Why I Decided to Use Laser Treatment for Acne Scars
Ever since I was a teenager, I have always been embarrassed by the appearance of my skin. I suffered terribly from acne in high school and developed pretty bad acne scars that made me lack confidence and feel unattractive. In my twenties, I had heard about laser treatment for acne scars, but instead, I learnt to hide the acne scars with artistically applied make-up. Despite this, I always felt like it was a mask hiding the true me.
One day, my best friend said bluntly that if I was unhappy about my skin I should do something about. I was thirty and enough was enough. I decided to use laser treatment for acne scars that had made be feel bad about my appearance since I was a teenager.
It really was a journey that I am glad I decided to take. I started the journey by reading as much as I could about the different solutions available to treat acne scars. I read about laser treatments and decided to explore further. Of course, as you do, I went to almighty Google and typed in my search- laser treatment for acne scars. I found a lot of useful information. I would love to share it here because my life changed so dramatically after I finally went ahead and got laser treatment for my acne scars. It sounds so cliché, but when you look better, you really do feel better.
How Laser Treatment for Acne Scars Works
I discovered that laser treatment for acne scars was a trusted procedure that could be highly effective in reducing the appearance of scarring and improving overall skin tone. This is basically what I discovered:
- Laser treatment involves the use of a laser to resurface and remodel the top layer of the skin. My reading got a little bit scientific, but I quickly grasped that the laser would remove the top layer of the skin, called the epidermis.
- The laser sends a beam of light radiation over affected areas of the skin and reveals the dermis below. Laser treatment also involves encouraging the skin layer below the epidermis – the dermis – to grow fresh collagen. Collagen is the great stuff in your skin that makes your skin look young, fresh and radiant.
- Basically laser treatment for acne scars involves beaming a laser over your acne scars to remove them and encouraging your skin to look healthy and pure.
It is definitely a bit of a medical procedure and like any medical procedure there are steps that you will need to go through to get to the end result – which in my case was smooth and pretty skin – finally!
You should use a properly accredited plastic surgeon.
Your insurance probably won’t pay for it – but double check just in case.
The operation will probably happen at the office of the plastic surgeon rather than the hospital. It is a day procedure – a quick in and out.
You will be put either under local anesthesia and be awake, or general anesthesia, and be asleep. I chose asleep because I am basically a great, big, giant wimp.
The laser treatment for acne scars procedure takes about one hour.
You will get pain relief for recovery – Yes!!
Someone should be with you after the procedure, obviously a close friend or family member who won’t run around gossiping with everyone about the fact that you have had plastic surgery for acne scars.
Recovering from my laser treatment for acne scars procedure
I didn’t really experience a great deal of pain after my laser treatment. My doctor gave me some good pain pills and I was pretty comfortable. I was quite happy for the first few days actually! I was also filled with such excitement about how I would look – I had seen my acne scars glaring back at me from the mirror for so long, I couldn’t even remember a time when they were not there.
I followed all of the advice given to me by my doctor, because I really wanted my laser treatment to help my acne scars. These were the main tips:
Don’t drive for a few days.
Stay out of the sun until the redness is completely gone from your face.
Don’t move your face around too much.
Moisturize your skin regularly.
Don’t use any makeup, strong shampoo and avoid all irritants.
To get the final result and see how your laser treatment for acne scars has worked, you will need to wait two weeks for the skin to heal and 2 months for the red to go away totally. I just put make-up on again after 2 weeks to cover the redness. This was not big deal because I did this anyway to hide my original acne scars so I was used to it.
Did My Laser Treatment for Acne Scars Work?
In a word – Yes. It worked an absolute charm. Now, my acne scars were not truly severe – I think the doctor described them as moderately severe. For me, the laser treatment was highly effective in removing my acne scars. I started dating a lovely new guy and it was such a relief to wander around with my skin free from make up. It was like taking off a heavy mask that I had felt forced to wear for many years. I would really recommend laser treatment for acne scars. It has really helped me and I feel so much better now. I am so glad that my best friend got impatient and told me to get my skin fixed.
